Deadly Virus Impacting Thousands of Dogs, Indianapolis Animal Shelters, clinics say!

Parvo is highly contagious and contracted through fecal matter, which can happen very easily when a dog is near another dog. One clinic in particular saw around 80 dogs test positive so far this year for the virus.

All you have to do is vaccinate your puppy at 6-8 weeks of age for the first one, and it’s important to booster up through 16 weeks,” Hollings said.

You can also vaccinate older dogs if you’re unsure if they’ve received a parvo vaccination.

This virus is so resilient that it can last for years in a home after a dog is gone. So it is important to know if your pup may have died from the virus and to not get another dog in that house. It is so worth it to get the vaccination for your pup because if they get really sick an intensive care visit might rack you up quite the vet bill. Click here to learn more!

Turtles Need YOU This Season!

As it is getting warmer turtles are starting to move around more. A busy street or highway and a slow turtle do not mix. Even if they are run over and their shell is crushed the turtle can remain alive in pain for weeks. Here are some tips on how to help them.

  1. Safely pull over and put your hazard lights on
  2. Help speed up the process by picking them up on both of their sides in front of their hind legs and careful not to drop them. (if this is a snapping turtle or any turtle you are not comfortable picking up please do not attempt) You could also try pushing them from behind if they seem like they are a snapping turtle, just make sure it is with a blunt object. Also make sure not to relocate the animal. Just keeping them going in the same direction.
  3. Get help for an injured turtle. If you can see that the turtle is visibly injured call a wildlife rehabilitation center for help.
  4. Help turtles avoid the road. If you see them heading toward a busy road try to take some action. Just do not relocate or change their direction too much.
