Wednesday Creature Feature ~ November 1, 2017

This weeks “Wednesday Creature Feature” has stories about what Sea Shepherd is doing to help porpoises, California new law on the sale of rescue animals and ends with a heartwarming video of a dog that was found in the hills of California after the horrible fires.

Dead Porpoises Found in Baltic Sea!

Sea Shepherd’s vessel Emanuel Bronner found yet another dead harbor porpoise a few weeks ago. Over the past couple of months there has been an increase in dead porpoises found in the Baltic Sea! In the past it was found that there were approximately 130 harbor porpoises that die each year but recently that number has increased substantially due to unreported cases.

The number is dramatically increasing and it is becoming increasingly suspicious. The main threat to the porpoises are that of noise, pollution, and fishing, all of which are man-made threats. It is suspected that trawl fishing nets/gillnets might be another cause of their death! Trawl nets are cone shaped nets that are towed by one or two boats, on the bottom or midwater. They are used to catch certain types of fish and shellfish.

California Pet Stores + Rescue Animals = Wednesday Miracle!

California has become the first state to require pet stores to only sell rescue animals! Under a new legislation all dogs, cats, and rabbits sold in these pet stores must come from animal shelters or non-profit rescue organizations by 2019! This is a huge win for California as it will hope to cut down the mass-breeding of pets in “puppy mills” and “kitten factories”. This is also a big break for California tax payers, on average they spend more than $250 million annually to house and euthanize animals in the shelters.

Nestle, Expands Animal Welfare Commitment!

This is another big milestone for the global welfare of animals! Nestle, the world’s largest food company, is demanding changes in the way chickens are raised for their meat! Nestle is now going to require that a specific set of important reforms form all of their suppliers be in effect as well as planning to phase out its use of chickens from farms that breed, house, and slaughter in an inhumane way! Over the next few years the suppliers must stop breeding chickens to grow so fat so fast that they suffer from crippling injuries.

Last month Nestle USA announced the purchase of Sweet Earth Foods, a company that is mostly plant-based food products, like meat-free bacon, breakfast burritos, and more!
